Once you have obtained your work permit (Employment Authorization Card), you can immediately apply for a Social Security Number. The application for a Social Security card is your own responsibility – the US government does not automatically issue this document.
In order to obtain a Social Security Card, you must visit your local Social Security office to complete an application and sign it. All you need to bring is your work permit, and a proof of identity and age. The proof of identity and age is an original or a certified copy of the following: foreign birth certificate, foreign passport, U.S. military record, or U.S. driver’s license.
Please be aware that the Social Security Services do not accept photocopies or notarized copies of these documents. After verifications of all documents, you will receive your Social security card at the mail address you had provided in the period of 1-4 weeks.
Most states will require you to demonstrate a Social Security Number in order obtain a driver’s license. You may also need to submit a proof of residence.
